How to Clean and Store Colored Contact Lenses: A Complete Care Guide

Taking care of your colored contact lenses is simple once it becomes a habit — and it is the single biggest factor in keeping your eyes healthy and your lenses comfortable for their full lifespan. Here is the complete routine.

Your Daily Routine (2 Minutes)

Before wearing

  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Lint from towels transfers to the lens, so air-dry or use a lint-free towel.
  2. Place the lens on your fingertip and rinse it with fresh multipurpose solution. Never use tap water.
  3. Check the lens is not inside out — the edges should form a clean bowl, not flare outward.

After removing

  1. Drop the lens in your palm, add a few drops of solution, and gently rub both sides for about 10 seconds. Rubbing removes the majority of deposits and makeup residue.
  2. Rinse again and store in a clean case filled with fresh solution.

Storage Rules That Matter

  • Replace the case every 1–3 months. Cases are the most common source of eye infections.
  • Never top up old solution — always empty, rinse the case with solution (not water), and air-dry it.
  • Keep the case away from the bathroom counter flush zone; spray and steam carry bacteria.
  • Never store lenses in water, saline meant for rinsing, or homemade saline. Only proper multipurpose or peroxide solution disinfects.

What Never to Do

Never sleep in your lenses unless they are specifically approved for extended wear. Never rinse them with tap water — Acanthamoeba, a microorganism found in ordinary water, can cause serious infections. Never share lenses with friends, even for a photo. And never wear a lens that feels scratchy, looks torn, or has passed its replacement date — for most of our styles that is 12 months after opening for yearly lenses, or the marked date for monthly and daily lenses.

Makeup and Lenses: the Right Order

Put your lenses in before applying makeup, and take them out before removing it. Choose oil-free, fragrance-free products and avoid applying eyeliner inside the waterline where it can migrate under the lens.

Signs You Should Remove Your Lenses Immediately

Redness that does not settle, pain, light sensitivity, or blurred vision are warning signs. Remove the lenses, let your eyes rest, and consult an eye care professional if symptoms persist. Your eyes are worth more than any outfit.
